Having sensitive teeth is something that many people suffer from and not many realise what causes it.

You can use ‘special’ toothpastes to try and eradicate the problem, but usually it’s important to understand the more serious, underlying reasons that cause sensitive teeth. There are number of reasons you can end up with sensitive teeth. For example, gum disease is a very common cause, but so is tooth decay and in some cases even over-brushing can cause it.

One way to take a step towards preventing it though, is to visit your dentist or dental hygienist at regular intervals so that they can potentially detect issues before they become a problem. If they see early signs of tooth decay or gum disease, something can be done, which should save you a lot of time and hassle trying to find alternative solutions.

If you don’t have gum disease or any tooth decay you can try some of the following to help eradicate sensitive teeth, or at the very least, to reduce its impact on your daily life.

  • Avoiding food and drink that is acidic is obviously going to help, because it will help to maintain a better level of tooth enamel, which in turn will reduce sensitivity. Additionally you should consider ensuring you maintain a good diet, because this will support your bones and overall health.
  • Using an electric toothbrush with a pressure sensitive light, such as the Oral B 5000, will help prevent you from using too much pressure when brushing and potentially wearing the enamel away.
  • If you have loss of enamel from the teeth then you may need to take additional action, such as bonding with composite fillings. Sadly once you’ve started to lose tooth enamel you cannot strengthen your teeth with toothpaste alone – even if they are specifically for sensitivity in the teeth.

If you are experiencing mild twinges or even more extreme teeth sensitivity then it’s time to visit the dentist for a full examination and means that you can find more permanent solutions to the problem you are facing. This could include various actions to reduce sensitivity as well as varnishes on the teeth, which are designed to protect them.
